FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- August 21, 2007 -- Mars
Petcare US, Inc. today announces a voluntary recall of select 50 lb bags
of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry dog food sold in two stores
in Pennsylvania. Only three bags of product were actually sold, with
only one bag still unaccounted for. The pet food is being recalled
because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, which
can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross
contamination, in people, especially children, the aged, and people with
compromised immune systems.
The recalled product should not be sold or fed to pets. Pet owners
should dispose of product in a safe manner (example, a securely covered
trash receptacle) and return the empty bag to the store where purchased
for a full refund.
Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling this pet
food, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after
having contact with the product or any surfaces exposed to the product.
Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor
themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely,
Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial
infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and
urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having
contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or
bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased
appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and
infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled
product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
